Designing SMART Indicators for Effective Monitoring & Evaluation

In today’s results-driven development environment, organizations are expected to demonstrate measurable impact, accountability, and learning. Poorly designed indicators remain one of the most common weaknesses in project monitoring, reporting, and evaluation—often undermining performance, donor confidence, and decision-making.

This intensive 5-day, hands-on workshop equips participants with real-world skills and practical tools to design, apply, and use SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) indicators that strengthen Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) systems and improve project outcomes.

Why Attend This Workshop

This course goes beyond theory to focus on practical indicator design and use in real project settings. Participants will gain the confidence to develop indicators that are clear, credible, measurable, and aligned with project objectives and donor requirements.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and strategic importance of SMART indicators in M&E
  • Develop clear, relevant, and measurable indicators aligned with project goals
  • Design appropriate data collection tools and methods
  • Set realistic targets and benchmarks
  • Integrate indicators into comprehensive M&E frameworks
  • Use indicator data to improve project performance, reporting, and decision-making

Participants will leave with a set of SMART indicators and practical tools that can be immediately applied in their projects.
